Performance Tune for Late-Model Toyota
Welcome to Adventure Motors, your one-stop shop for the OTT Tune. Overland Tailor Tuning was designed for custom overland builds including the engine and transmission tuning for late-model Toyotas.
Custom ECU & Transmission Tuning for Toyota and Lexus
Overland Tailor Tuning builds custom engine and transmission calibrations for Toyota and Lexus platforms — the fix for gear hunting, throttle lag and lazy shifting. Adventure Motors is an authorized OTT retailer covering Missouri, Kansas and Illinois, and the calibration is always installed in person by the shop that builds the rigs it runs on — never shipped to your driveway as a DIY device.
You don’t have to come to us. We tune at our Grandview shop year round and take the OTT Tune on the road, running Tune Days in the major cities across our territory — Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbia, Topeka, Salina and Wichita among them. If we haven’t been to your city yet, ask.
Every tune is developed and validated by OTT utilizing in-house dynamometers and on-road testing. This means your vehicle is getting a proven tune that has been thoroughly tested, has real world data behind it, and is designed with driveability and longevity at its core.
What You'll Notice on the First Drive
A tuned truck drives the way it should have from the factory.
No more gear hunting
Upshift and downshift points move to where the torque curve actually is, so the transmission stops cycling between gears on grades and at highway speed.
Sharper throttle response
Throttle curves are remapped so the pedal answers immediately instead of lagging behind your right foot.
Smoother, smarter shifting
Shift pressure is modulated for firmer, quicker changes, and torque converter lockup is recalibrated to suit how the truck is actually driven.
More power and torque
OTT validates every calibration on a dynamometer. Gains depend on the platform, the modifications and the type of tune — the goal is the broadest torque curve, not a headline number.
What the Tune Actually Changes
An OTT tune is a recalibration of both control units — not a canned power adder. These are the parameters that get touched.
Engine Control Unit
- Mass airflow (MAF) calibration
- Rescaled for larger MAF housings and aftermarket intakes so air-fuel calculations stay accurate.
- Throttle response remapping
- Several profiles to choose from — quicker than stock, close to stock, or deliberately softened for rock crawling.
- VVT-i optimization
- Cam timing reworked for the best combination of low- and mid-range torque, with emissions held at stock levels.
- Ignition timing
- Refined for cleaner combustion and better responsiveness, leaving Toyota's factory knock control intact.
- ACIS tuning
- Intake resonance tuned on engines with the Acoustic Control Induction System, adding torque and horsepower.
- Fuel map corrections
- Air-fuel ratios trimmed across the full operating range.
Transmission Control Unit
- Shift point optimization
- Shift RPM moved so the next gear lands in the optimal part of the torque curve.
- Shift pressure modulation
- Hydraulic pressure adjusted through each change for firmer shifts and less lag.
- Torque converter lockup
- Engagement and disengagement points recalibrated to sharpen driveability.
- Rev hang elimination
- On manual transmissions, the delay in RPM drop between shifts is reduced or removed.
Injector scaling and gear calibration are available where the build calls for them.
Every Mod You Add Moves the Truck Further From Its Factory Tune
Armor, a rack, a roof tent and 35s all add weight the factory calibration was never given. The engine and transmission are still working from Toyota's assumptions about a stock truck. A tune is what gives the driveability back.
Re-geared axles
After re-gearing, the factory ECU and TCU have no way to adjust their parameters to match the new ratio. The OTT tune provides the proper calibration to compensate for the change.
Larger tires
Gear and tire size calibration restores correct shift behaviour once you're off the stock tire diameter. The tune does not recalibrate the speedometer, however.
Aftermarket intake
A larger MAF housing needs its sensor transfer function rescaled — which can also clear the intake-related check engine light that sometimes follows the swap.
AGM battery
AGM batteries want more than the ~13.8V an alternator calibrated for lead-acid delivers. Charging voltage can be raised to suit, on select platforms.
Tow/Haul, ECT and Sport
Each secondary drive mode can carry its own throttle and transmission map, so a loaded trailer and an empty trail rig aren't asking for the same calibration.

What to Expect
About an hour in the shop
Most tunes are finished in roughly an hour. Book ahead — in-shop appointments and Tune Day slots both fill up.
Your stock file is kept
OTT retains the original ECU calibration, and as an authorized retailer we keep a copy of your stock file too. The truck can go back to its factory tune whenever you want.
Factory updates included
OTT only supports the current Toyota factory calibration. If your ECU isn't up to date, that update is performed during your appointment at no additional cost.
Pump gas, your choice of grade
Naturally aspirated trucks run 87 octane and up; supercharged applications must run 91 or better. Octane learning stays active, so you can switch grades without re-tuning. E85 isn't supported.
OTT Tune Day Events
We take the OTT Tune on the road. Grab a spot at an upcoming Tune Day near you — registration is handled through Calendly.

OTT Tune Questions
Can I go back to the stock tune?
Yes. OTT retains every stock ECU file, and as an authorized retailer we keep a copy of your stock file as well, so your vehicle can be returned to its original factory calibration at any time.
How long does an OTT tune take?
About an hour at the shop. If your ECU isn't on Toyota's latest factory calibration, that update is performed during your appointment at no additional cost — OTT only supports current factory calibrations.
Will a tune void my Toyota warranty?
Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act a manufacturer cannot void your warranty simply because of an aftermarket modification unless it can show the modification caused the failure, and OTT reports no warranty problems across its platforms to date. That said, OTT's own guidance is that if your warranty is a concern you should hold off on tuning — check with your dealer or warranty provider first.
Will my vehicle still pass emissions testing?
OTT does not alter or modify emissions controls or readiness monitors, and will not tune a vehicle with emissions equipment removed or an emissions-related check engine light. Emissions rules vary by jurisdiction, so confirming what applies where the vehicle is registered is the owner's responsibility.
Can a dealer tell the vehicle has been tuned?
Yes. The ECU ID stays stock, but the CVN changes, and a CVN mismatch tells a dealer or emissions station that the ECU has been modified.
What fuel does a tuned truck need?
Naturally aspirated vehicles can run 87 octane or higher. Supercharged applications must run 91 or higher. E85 is not supported; ethanol-free fuel is fine. Because Toyota's adaptive ignition control is left intact, the ECU adjusts timing to the fuel in the tank, so you can move between grades without touching the tune.
Will the tune correct my speedometer for larger tires?
No. On these Toyota platforms the speedometer isn't controlled by the ECU, so no calibration can correct it — that takes a separate tool such as a Hypertech or Rough Country calibrator. The tune does correct shift behaviour for tire size and gear ratio.
Does a more aggressive throttle setting add power?
No. The horsepower and torque gains are the same. Throttle profiles are driver preference only. They change how the pedal feels throughout the pedal range, not horsepower, torque or shift points.
